Effective October 25, 1959, CPR divided their system into nine areas. Each was given a number
1-9, east to west, and this number became the first digit of all employee numbers issued by a
particular area. Within each area, timetable second digits 1-9 repeated continuously. Ideally,
across the syste, the numbers of all emp tt effective on the same date would end with the same
digit. The system worked well for a while (with a problem when #82 of 10-25-64 had to be
recalled and reissued) but began to have problems (a number of numbers were skipped / not
issued) in the mid-1970s when timetables no longer had to be reissued every April and October
to match changes in passenger train schedules. The "3" series was discontinued in the mid-1960s
and other series were combined - "8" and "9" were merged in 1988, with "8" series numbering
continuing. In April 1993 the railway returned to a 10-divisional format.
